Getting to Bald Head Island

YOUR FIRST TRIP TO BALD HEAD ISLAND

What to know before the tournament

Bald Head Island is a barrier island with no bridge and no cars. The only way to get there is by ferry from Southport. This guide covers what you need to know to get to tournament headquarters at the Bald Head Island Yacht Club for the October 9–11, 2026 weekend.

Before You Leave

1. Register for the tournament. If you haven’t already, sign up at BHISurfFishing.com. Save your registration confirmation — you’ll want it handy on arrival.

2. Get a valid NC fishing license. All anglers must have their own. Purchase online at ncwildlife.org or at any major outdoor retailer before you board the ferry.

3. Buy your ferry ticket. Visit www.baldheadislandferry.com or call (910) 457-5003. The passenger ferry runs roughly hourly. Round-trip tickets can be purchased in advance.

4. Plan for parking. Parking at Deep Point Marina (where the ferry departs) requires a daily fee. Visit www.baldheadislandparking.com or call (910) 457-7289 for current rates.

5. Pack smart. October weather can shift fast. Bring layers, rain gear, sunscreen, water, and snacks. Limited food and supply options exist on the island, so bring what you’ll need.

Day Of — Getting to the Ferry

1. Drive to Deep Point Marina. The address is 1301 Ferry Road, Southport, NC 28461. It’s the same road as the state-operated Fort Fisher ferry, but Deep Point is before that landing.

2. Arrive at least 30 minutes early. Tournament weekend is busy. Missing your ferry could mean missing a weigh-in window.

3. Bring your ID and registration confirmation. Both are useful for check-in once you arrive at the Yacht Club.

4. Board the passenger ferry. Tram service is available for luggage and gear. Fishing rods, tackle boxes, and reasonable coolers are all welcome.

5. The ride is about 20 minutes. Enjoy it — views of the Cape Fear River and Old Baldy Lighthouse make it one of the better commutes you’ll ever have.

Once You Arrive on the Island

When the ferry docks at Bald Head Island, head to the Bald Head Island Yacht Club — that’s tournament headquarters for check-in, weigh-ins, and meals. You have two options for getting there:

OPTION A: WALK OR TRAM

OPTION B: RENT A GOLF CART

The   Yacht Club is a short walk from the marina. The village tram also runs   frequently and can drop you near the Club.

A good option if you’re   only bringing what you can carry, and most of your fishing will be along the   south beach.

Daily   golf cart rentals are available at the marina through Cary Cart Company.

(910)   457-7333 | www.carycartco.com

Recommended if you’re   bringing gear, fishing multiple beaches, or moving cargo between the Yacht   Club and your rental.

Remember — there are no personal cars on Bald Head Island. Everyone gets around by golf cart, bicycle, or on foot. The island-wide speed limit is 18 MPH. A valid driver’s license is required to operate a golf cart.

Good to Know

• Cell service can be spotty. Save the tournament coordinator’s number, the ferry schedule, and the weigh-in times before you leave the mainland.

• The Yacht Club is tournament HQ. Registration, weigh-ins, the volunteer dinner, and Sunday awards all happen here.

• Weigh-in windows are firm. Saturday 10–11 AM and 5–6 PM; Sunday 11 AM–12 PM. Plan your fishing around them.

• The island is a residential community. Keep noise to a minimum, especially early morning and after dark.

• Have your lodging sorted before you arrive. Tournament weekend fills up early on Bald Head, and ferry capacity is finite.

• Bring cash for the food donation. There’s a donation bucket plus a Venmo QR code if you’d rather give that way. All proceeds benefit the Kids Making It woodworking program.

Tournament Headquarters Map

Once the ferry docks. Look across the marina — tournament headquarters is directly opposite the ferry landing. The Bald Head Island Yacht Club is where you'll check in, weigh fish each day, and gather for Sunday awards. You can walk the dock path around the harbor, catch the village tram, or take a cart over.
